jim angle joins us now live in washington. jim, you've been looking into this. what are charities really worried about ear? >> reporter: well, gregg, both the president's plan to raise taxes on the wealthy and the republican willingness to raise revenues by limiting deductions could end up hurting charities because they rely on the generosity of those with money. >> high income people tend to give very generous gifts. they may give a million dollar contribution to a local hospital or local art museum. there's a small number of donors at the high end that account or for really big chunk of the charitable give anything this country. and those are the folks that would be most impacted by this tax policy change. >> reporter: now, in fact, united way gets 15% of its total income, some $500 million, from those giving $10,000 or more. gregg: well, jim, a lot of people who give to charities do it because they think thest the right thing to do to help others. they don't always do it necessarily because they want a deduction to reduce their taxable income, right in. >> re

renee marsh is in washington with tips to keep your holiday spending under control. good morning. >> good morning, carol. this new survey really suggests that this shopping season will be a good one for retailers. this survey comes from the consumer federation of america as well as the credit union national association. so they spoke with more than 1,000 people over the phone. and the survey is suggesting that we will see holiday spending increase anywhere between 3.5 to 4% from last year. keep in mind that's despite those doom and gloom reports about the fiscal cliff, potential tax hikes on everyone, if congress does not act. of the people who were surveyed between november 9th and 13th, many of them said they do plan on spending more this year compared to last year. i have some interesting breakouts for you here, carol. more men said that they will spend more this year compared to last year than women. as far as age goes, the generation wires 18 through 24, they say that they, too, plan on spending more. remember, that group of people have had a tough time breaking
